The Cereals Program aims to increase farmer productivity by developing appropriate and adaptable technologies. This involves networking and collaboration with other national programs, sub-regional programs, and international agricultural research centers.

The Cereals Program:

  • Screens and identifies adaptable, suitable, and higher yielding plant varieties for introduction into The Gambia system and conducts modest foundation seed production.
  • Collects and inventories varieties of early millet, maize, sorghum, rice and "findo" varieties.
  • Identifies sustainable cultural practices that are easily adaptable for maximized grain production per hectare.
  • Provides pure, viable, vigorous, pathogen-free nucleus seed to the NARI Seed Technology Unit for production of registered and certified seeds.
